What is the Traditional Japanese Pattern(日本文樣)?
"No nation like the Japanese, love to take names for all kinds of things." Different shapes will be named according to the reminiscent of things, let people feel the cultural and knowledge of the Japanese Traditional Pattern.
The birth of the Japanese Traditional Pattern can be traced back to the birth of the text. The most well known of these take a single design and create patterns by placing the design systematically on fabric. They're mostly used for kimono, packaging, and other goods and sundries, but not only are they ultra cute -- they also have proper significance!
Japanese Traditional Pattern that bring good luck (1): types and shapes
Triangle:
When fews triangles are connected together, called "mountain shape"「山形文」. Several stacked ones are called "scales pattern"「鱗文」. When used alone, they are called "scales". In Japan, triangles have been regarded as scripts of the nature of witchcraft since ancient times, and therefore often appear on the imprint of exorcism and exorcism.
Hexagon:
The pattern formed by the hexagon is regarded as the pattern of "The Tortoise Shell Pattern"「龜甲文」, which is called the tortoise shell. Tortoises have long been a symbol of longevity, so this pattern is also a prayer for long life. When the tortoiseshells are overlapped, it is called「子持龜甲文」, and「子持」means holding the hand of the child.
Stripes:
All stripe patterns are described in English by the word "stripe", but the Japanese name for the various stripe patterns: the wide parallel lines are like the burdocks. Called “Burdocks Stripes”「牛蒡縞文」; stripes that gradually thicken from the center to the sides, which look like a waterfall flowing, called "Two waterfall Stripes" 「兩瀧縞文」; add a strip next to a thick line Thin lines, like a pair of parent with children. Called "Parent-child Stripes” 「子持縞文」.

Plant-Sakura:
When the Sakura bloom, it is so smashed that the whole sky can be dyed into the color of Sakura, but the petals of the wind are not scattered in the stack, so the Japanese Sakura symbolize the spirit of the Japanese samurai who is not afraid of death.
Plant-Pine:
Evergreen pine has the meaning of "longevity" in Japan. Since the Edo period, the Japanese have also begun to spread the saying that "three friends of the ages" - Pine, bamboo, plum. The symbol of auspicious pine, its branches, leaves, and stems have also become the source of artistic inspiration. In the tradition and handle, you can see the various images of " Pine " are very elegant.
Plant-Dandelion:
Dandelion is similar shaping with a drum, and the sound of music has the power to pray for the gods to come and eliminate disasters. Therefore, the dandelion pattern is sometimes called "drum grass pattern"「鼓草文」.
The meaning of the Traditional Japanese Pattern(日本文樣) are mostly people's wishes for happiness, but the content is varied. The variety of these patterns are absolutely amazing. 何謂文樣?
「沒有一個民族像日本人一樣,那麼愛替各種東西取名字。」不同形狀會依據令人聯想到的事物來取名,讓人感受大和之心,並了解文樣的知識與趣味。
文樣的誕生可追溯至文字誕生以前,遠古的日本人在服裝、藝術品、漆製品、陶藝品、建築物等物體的表面描繪圖樣,如形狀、動植物、人面、風景等為基礎的象形文樣,及後將農業、戰爭、文化、宗教的景象,以圖樣的方式保留下來,而這種圖樣在日本,稱為「文樣」。
帶來好運的日本傳統文樣 (一):種類與形狀
三角形:
一個連一個的三角形,稱為「山形文」,好幾個堆疊起來的,稱為「鱗文」,單獨使用時,以「鱗」稱呼三角形。在日本,三角形自古被視為具有巫術性質的文樣,因此經常出現在除厄、驅魔的印記上。
六角形:
將六角形所構成的圖案視為龜殼的文樣,而稱為「龜甲文」。將龜甲文加以重疊時,稱為「子持龜甲文」,「子持」即帶著孩子之意。
條紋:
所有條紋圖案在英文中都是用「stripe」一個字來形容,但日本人卻為各種條紋圖案所聯想的形態取名:粗直線並列的圖案就像把牛蒡排列在一起,而稱為「牛蒡縞文」(縞即條紋);從中央往兩側慢慢變粗的條紋,看起來像瀑布流動,稱為「兩瀧縞文」(瀧即瀑布);在一條粗線條旁加上一條細幼線條,像一對親子,因此稱為「子持縞文」。
植物-櫻花:
櫻花綻放時,雖絢爛得能將整片天空染成櫻花的顏色,但一陣風來花瓣又毫不戀棧地散落,所以日本人以櫻花象徵日本武士不畏死亡的精神。
植物-松樹:
長青的松樹在日本有「長壽」的意義。自江戶時代以來,日本人也開始流傳了「歲寒三友」——松、竹、梅的說法。象徵吉祥的松,其枝、葉、幹也都成了藝術靈感來源,在傳統和柄中可看到各種形象的「松」,非常典雅。
植物-蒲公英:
蒲公英因花開的樣子與鼓類似,而音樂的音色具有祈請神明降臨、消災除厄的力量,所以有時會將蒲公英的文樣,稱為「鼓草文」。
文樣的含意多數是人對於幸福的祈求與心願,不過內容卻五花八門,這些願望的種類之多,絕對令人驚奇,本回分享部分形狀與植物的文樣後,下回再分享其他日本文樣的意義,感受自古流傳的日本傳統所蘊含的意趣之厚。
